Itati
Big Water, Big Rewards
Location
The Parana River in South is second in length only to the Amazon. It is the drainage basin for much of the South Central part of South America. It is very big water with average flows around 500 thousand CFS. It is the perfect place to chase large dorado and, if conditions are right, you can also catch Pacu and Pira Pita for the Itati grand slam!
Fishing
The Itati lodge is located on the upper section of the Parana River, approximately 90 miles downstream from the Yacyreta Dam and upstream of the Paraguay River. As a tail water above the Paraguay, this stretch of river is known for its clear and stable water flow. The Upper Parana river is technically a more challenging dorado fishery, but you can be rewarded with one of the biggest dorado you will ever catch! You will fish 2 anglers at a time while the guide keeps you in place with the trolling motor. Most of the focus here is on fishing subsurface structures; bank drop offs, submerged trees, mid stream rocks, and currents flowing out of lagoons. A floating line or clear tip intermediate line will do everything you need. You do not need sinking lines or sink tips.
Sightfishing
If conditions are right, you will also be able to stalk and cast to visible dorado feeding on baitfish on the sand flats. Similar to fishing for permit or bonefish in saltwater!
Behemoths
Overall, expect to make a lot of quick and accurate casts here. This is a fishery best suited to intermediate to advanced dorado anglers. Your shots can be fewer, but the reward will typically be bigger fish. This section of the Upper Parana is home to the largest Dorado in South America. Every season we land a handful of fish above 30 and reaching 40 pounds.
Daily Routine
The fishing schedule at Itati is normally a very early start in the morning, followed by lunch and a nap mid day at the lodge, then heading back out to fish in the evening and into dark. Some of the best fishing here happens at dusk and into the dark!
The boats are located just a few steps away from the lodge and it is a short ride to the fishing spots.
Lodging
The lodge overlooks the river and is built in a traditional estancia style. The rooms are air conditioned and comfortable, and the entire lodge has WiFi as well as cell service (check with your provider for international rates). The main lodge/dining area is a short walk from your room and the professional chef and staff prepare local and international cuisine as well as a variety of snacks throughout the day. There is also a swimming pool that overlooks the river, perfect for cooling down after your morning of fishing.
